Health & Safety

North America’s Building Trades Unions is committed to ensuring safe and healthy working conditions in the construction industry. NABTU advocates for common sense safety and health standards, policies and effective, enforcement to protect construction workers. NABTU’s world-class registered apprenticeship programs and training programs offer opportunities for construction workers to develop and improve their safety and health knowledge and safety leadership skills. NABTU is also at the forefront responding to urgent safety and health issues including suicide prevention, opioid use, occupational heat illness prevention, and preventing falls in construction.

For more than 35 years, NABTU’s safety and health non-profit, CPWR-The Center for Construction Research and Training, has been dedicated to reducing occupational injuries, illnesses and fatalities for all workers in construction. CPWR is the leading construction safety and health organization providing free, practical solutions to the entire construction industry.  This occurs through three major areas: research, training and service.

  • CPWR engages prominent universities, industry leaders and government partners to conduct research on construction safety and health that identifies trends in the construction and evidence-based solutions.
  • Collaborating with multiple partners, including NABTU unions, CPWR’s industry-recognized training programs prepare construction workers to recognize and respond to hazards.
  • CPWR’s service program, BTMed, provides free, ongoing medical screenings for construction workers formerly employed at U.S. Department of Energy nuclear weapons facilities at risk of occupational diseases.
