Statement on the Nomination of Elaine Chao to be U.S. Secretary of Transportation

WASHINGTON, DC – The following statement was issued today by North America’s Building Trades Unions in response to the announcement that Elaine Chao will be nominated to serve as the next Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation:

“North America’s Building Trades Unions congratulate Elaine Chao on her nomination by President-Elect Donald Trump to serve as our nation’s next Transportation Secretary.  Our unions are familiar with Sec. Chao from her previous tenure as U.S. Secretary of Labor where, though we did not always agree, she maintained an open-door policy and worked with us to understand the issues facing the construction industry and its workforce.  With so many challenges facing our nation and our infrastructure in critical need of repair, we hope the Senate confirms this nomination so that that we can get to work on behalf of the American people and the members we represent.

“We look forward and welcome the opportunity to work with Secretary Chao in order to take the necessary and immediate steps towards enacting a significant new infrastructure program that rebuilds our nation while preserving and promoting strong community wage and benefit standards that will bring widespread benefits to our economy.”
