Overview

In October, NABTU visited the Los Angeles / Orange Counties B.C.T.C. for several events to continue the nationwide Opportunity Pipeline Tour. On Monday, October 23, NABTU visited IUPAT District Council 36’s Finishing Trades Institute for a training center tour and brief press conference alongside County Supervisor, Janice Hahn, and State Assemblymember, Miguel Santiago. Then, on Tuesday, October 24, NABTU held a press conference at the Intuit Dome – the currently-under construction arena for the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers. The press conference also featured Inglewood Mayor, James Butts, Jr., State Senator, Stephen Bradford, representatives from AECOM/Turner, and three Apprenticeship Readiness Program graduates that are currently working at the Intuit Dome. In addition to these events, NABTU also stopped by a SAG-AFTRA picket line to show support and display solidarity during their contract negotiations. Over the course of this trip, key initiatives such as local hire, apprentice utilization, and apprenticeship readiness programs were frequently featured.

ABC 7 Los Angeles – “Again, it’s not just about basketball, it’s about jobs, it’s about the economy,” said State Sen. Steven Bradford. “This project does that.” On any given day there’s 1,200 union workers on site working on the $2 billion Intuit Dome project. Designers wanted it to be as environmentally friendly as possible which is why they had their electricians install solar panels on the roof.

Univision Los Angeles – The city of Inglewood, through its different construction projects, has generated jobs and careers, reducing crime and unemployment. The construction of the Intuit Dome arena, home of the Los Angeles Clippers, for example, is providing opportunities for new generations. “You give people who didn’t have a job the opportunity to learn a new trade,” says Mayor James Butts.
