NABTU PRESIDENT SEAN MCGARVEY NAMED TO U.S. COMMERCE DEPARTMENT WORKFORCE POLICY ADVISORY BOARD

WASHINGTON, DC – February 13, 2019 – NABTU President Sean McGarvey was today appointed by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross to serve on the department’s Workforce Policy Advisory Board.

The Board is a product of an Executive Order signed by President Trump in July, which established the National Council for the American Worker to create a comprehensive national workforce strategy to close the skills gap, expand apprenticeships, and encourage corporate investment in worker education.

The Board is charged with guiding the National Council as it identifies and employs strategies to promote apprenticeships and workforce development programs. As part of this effort, the Board will develop a national career pathways campaign and recommend a specific course of action for improving labor market data to better match workers and students with skills and education industry demands.

“Our members are the most highly-skilled workers in the industry as a direct result of investing in apprenticeship education and training for over 100 years,” said McGarvey. “We know what works, not only to effectively train the most highly-skilled worker for a job but also to boost secure career pathways to the middle-class. I thank the Administration and Secretary Ross for this appointment, and I look forward to participating and providing NABTU’s perspective and experience in the important work of this Board and the National Council.”
