NABTU Statement on AFGE Union Member and VA Nurse Alex Pretti

Washington, D.C. – January 27, 2026 – Today, North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) President Sean McGarvey issued the following statement:

“North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) joins the entire labor movement and communities across North America in mourning the tragic death of our union brother, Alex Jeffrey Pretti, an AFGE Local 3669 member and beloved ICU nurse who cared for our nation’s wounded warriors and was fatally shot by a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Minneapolis over the weekend.

“His killing has raised serious concerns about excessive force, as multiple videos and eyewitness accounts contradict federal claims about the moments leading up to his death.

“NABTU stands in full solidarity with AFGE in calling for an independent, transparent investigation and for accountability at every level. The labor movement is united in demanding the truth and in ensuring that no worker, no human being, is subjected to excessive force or death by federal agents for merely exercising their constitutional rights, let alone for coming to the aid of a fellow citizen.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Alex’s family, colleagues, and union family.”
