NABTU STATEMENT APPLAUDING IOWA VOTERS FOR DEFEATING RACIST DAVIS-BACON ANTAGONIST STEVE KING

Washington, D.C. – June 3, 2020 – North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) President Sean McGarvey issued the following statement applauding the Iowa primary election results ousting Steve King from office:

“In his nine-terms, Representative Steve King made a name for himself not only for his incendiary racist views, but as the lead antagonist against Davis-Bacon labor standards and pushing right-to-work for less legislation. Repeatedly leading fringe elements within the Republican Congress to drastically reduce take-home pay, benefits and worsen working conditions for construction workers, he demonstrated his sheer disdain for the American workers who built this great nation.

“Just as his efforts to harm American workers were routinely thwarted by Congress with resounding bipartisan support, so too have Iowans thwarted his last effort to stand in the U.S. Congress. We’re pleased Iowa voters sent a clear and strong message that racism and right-to-work for less are bad for workers and families and that warped and outrageous views like his will no longer be tolerated. As this vote and the nationwide protests over the past week show us, Americans want justice for marginalized communities and will not be silenced.”
